Inside one book

The competition sets the price more than the bookmaker does

Three of the books on the board published enough of their own prices to be broken down by competition. Inside SportyBet alone the margin runs from 1.95% to 10.93%, a spread of 8.98 points. The spread across the whole board, from the sharpest book to the widest, is 4.77.

These are competition-level medians. The figure for top-flight European football is not this book’s margin: its median across all 491 football matches on the same feed is more than three times the top-flight one.

The 2.25 per cent below covers top-flight European football only. This book’s all-football median across 860 events is more than double it, and the record forbids quoting the smaller figure without saying which football it describes.

The five top European domestic leagues only, and the record is explicit that this is not the book’s margin: across every division on the same feed the median is more than four times as large.

What follows from it

The first thing is a warning about every price comparison in this market, including the one on this site. A book that publishes only its top-flight prices will look sharper than a book that publishes everything, and the difference will be entirely an artefact of what each one let anybody see. That is the whole reason the board grades each margin by what it was measured on rather than printing eight decimals in a column.

The second is more useful. A punter who moves from lower-division football and friendlies onto the biggest European leagues is charged several points less by the same book, on the same account, with no shopping around at all. Nothing else available in this market moves the number that far.

The deduction on bundesliga at SportyBet is 1.91 per cedi in a hundred. On club friendlies it is 9.85.

Questions this page gets asked

Does this mean one book is cheap and another is expensive?

It means less than the headline figures suggest. The same book prices its top-flight European football at a small fraction of what it charges on friendlies, so a comparison between two books is only meaningful when both were measured across the same mix of football.

Why not just publish the top-flight figure for every book?

Because it would be the wrong number for almost every slip. Most of what a Ghanaian punter actually bets is not the five biggest European leagues, and quoting the sharpest corner of a book as its price would flatter every book that publishes one and punish every book that does not break its prices down.

Which competitions are dearest?

On the one book that published a full breakdown, club friendlies carry the widest margin at 10.93% against 1.95% on bundesliga. Second-division football and minor cup ties sit between the two.
